A peer-to-peer discussion with the Dean of the University of Miami's Herbert Business School and Leonard M. Miller University Chair Professor.

🎙️ Paul Pavlou, Dean of the Miami Herbert Business School at the University of Miami, blends an impressive background of information systems, engineering and fundraising into his work, providing a strong foundation for leading his school into the future amidst today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape. Now into his second deanship, following a remarkable tenure as Dean of the Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston, he’s thinking bigger—what’s been labeled as a moonshot ambition—about how to reshape Miami Herbert’s strategic plan to increase rankings, recognition and accomplishments. In this fascinating episode of Deans Counsel, Pavlou shares a multifaceted strategy to accomplish a truly personalized experience for students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and beyond, that includes individualized career advising and coaching, combined with mentorship and a strong alumni and peer support network.
“We’re beefing up our career success team to provide that support and guidance, including experiential learning, including professional development, and all the way to strong connections to industry to help our students get at least their best first job, and also provide support for all of our alumni to be able to have a resource here in our career center to help them continue and progress throughout their career.”
Pavlou has also engaged faculty to further personalize student experience using technology, artificial intelligence (AI) and custom projects as part of experiential learning working with industry. This personal customization of programs, he believes, adds to the business school’s overall value proposition and reputation. Looking ahead, Pavlou sees AI as a very important topic for business schools to stay relevant as it is transforming the world of business. That is one reason he’s already led AI to become Miami Herbert’s number one executive education offering.
“Basically, the person who uses AI can become a better faculty member, a better researcher, a better administrator, a better everything, whatever that may be. So that's why I'm very passionate about instilling the latest technologies and tools in our graduates. So by the time they finish from here, they are well positioned [for the future].”
